Thank you for considering this CFDI Program, developed by Associates in Forensic Investigations and in partnership exclusively with the Criminal Defense Investigation Training Council (CDITC) and specifically for Criminal Defense Investigators.
The CFDI will enhance any Criminal Defense Investigator, and all CDITC and other preeminent certifications and experiences to bring your Criminal Defense Investigations to a new level of advanced knowledge and skills for the most demanding Criminal Defense Investigations areas – involving Death and Serious Bodily Injury (SBI) incidents. You will also have unique access to collegial networking and continuing education.
The CFDI will enhance any Criminal Defense Investigator, and all CDITC and other preeminent certifications and experiences to bring your Criminal Defense Investigations to a new level of advanced knowledge and skills for the most demanding Criminal Defense Investigations areas – involving Death and Serious Bodily Injury (SBI) incidents. You will also have unique access to collegial networking and continuing education.
The CFDI is intended to challenge, educate, and elevate you as a Criminal Defense Investigator. There are three basic requirements: 1) Qualifications; 2) Complete and pass the basic Pre-Requisite Courses; and 3) Completing and passing this advanced-level Program. Once attaining the CFDI, annual Continuing Education is required.

Annual CE Compliance:
CFDI Continuing Education is available from several sources, and skills of the CFDI. The following are acceptable options, and in order of preference:
* Once the CFDI has testified three times as an expert, the credential is upgraded to CFDI-Expert. Testimonial proof is required.
Meet the following qualifications:
- You must be actively licensed (or business registration if an unlicensed state), employed, or in-house providing Criminal Defense Investigations.
- You must have at least 4,000 hours of aggregate documented private investigations experience.
- This includes at least 2,000 hours of documented exclusive Criminal Defense Investigations experience.
Complete and pass the basic Pre-Requisite Courses:
- Successfully complete and pass the Equivocal Death / SBI Investigations for PIs Certificate Course at www.MedicolegalDeathInvestigations.com. A presentation of the completion and passing certificate is required. The webinar series includes the webinars and reference material, and the book Death and Serious Bodily Injury Investigation for the Professional Investigator at www.DeathandInjuryInvestigationGuide.com available from our agency at a discount.
Complete the Certified Forensic Death Investigator Program:
- Successfully complete and pass the Certified Forensic Death Investigator Program. This Program includes the webinars and reference material, and accompanying book. The book is sent directly from our agency after registering for the Program and is included in the Program cost.
- Complete each webinar;
- Complete and pass the written exam (80% to pass, 225 questions – 1/3 from Equivocal Death / SBI Investigations for PIs Webinar Series and 2/3 from this Program webinars, reference materials, and accompanying book;
- Complete a written sample report from a case study and image(s) provided.
- The written portion is last, and is a Pass or Fail and must pass to complete the CFDI examination process.
- A sample report is provided, and a report template – which may be customized by the CFDI applicant.
- A sample case study is provided with at least one accompanying image.
- Due to the inability to review a complete case, we take this into account for the report. The report is written as a Review & Analysis process and must fully describe the process specific to the information provided. Full instructions and guidance are provided.
- Grading is based on applying the CFDI protocols, spelling and grammar, subject matter covered, facts presented, and professional standards. The grading process is fair, and confidential.
Maintaining your CFDI and Continuing Education:
- An annual 10 hours of CE is required, and is not exclusive to the CFDI - you may use any applicable CE options. There are two components: 1) 5 hours specific to forensic death investigation or related; and 2) 5 additional hours of criminal defense investigation or related. A list of credit hours options is provided.
Annual CE Compliance:
CFDI Continuing Education is available from several sources, and skills of the CFDI. The following are acceptable options, and in order of preference:
- Any written report (redacted) in which the CFDI provided review and analysis in a criminal defense case. (1 hour each; max 2 hours applicable)
- Court testimony as a CFDI fact witness in any criminal defense case. (1 hour each; max 2 hours applicable; testimonial proof required)
- Court testimony as a CFDI expert witness in any criminal defense case. (1 hour each; max 2 hours; testimonial proof required)*
- Present a lecture or seminar specific to forensic death investigation or related, and criminal defense investigation or related. (up to 2 hours applicable)
- Be independently published with any article specific to forensic death investigation or related, and criminal defense investigation or related. (up to 2 hours applicable)
- Seminars, webinars, and conferences
- You must provide a certificate of attendance / completion with the schedule or curriculum to determine applicable topics and hours. We recommend your state association, CDITC courses, NALI, and those offered by our agency at www.InvestigativeCourses.com (CFDIs receive a special discount). If you are unsure, please send us a curriculum or schedule in advance. If an exam is given, proof of passing and an additional .5 hours added)
